The Foundation Degree in Commercial Music offers students a unique opportunity to acquire a range of skills and knowledge relating to the music industry of today. The course is designed to interface directly with the industry and includes significant work placement opportunities through live performance. Module content includes songwriting, composing for television and the media, the release of a commercial studio album, event management, the study of popular music, production of a website, the study of the music industry, instrumental studies, sound recording, music technology techniques, live sound and live performance, plus a residential tour in Year two of the course.

The course runs at Platform One on the Isle of Wight. Students will need to be based full time on the Island in order to study this course (*see footnote). Platform One have been working with University of Chichester since 2003. Resources for students include industry experienced staff, three professional recording studios, purpose built rehearsal rooms, a music technology suite, experienced instrumental tutors and links with the music industry, including the Isle of Wight Festival and the Bestival.

Students will work in bands with regular performance opportunities in professional music venues. This work includes the commercial release of an album, as well as the organisation and implementation of a tour in Year two of the course.

The course content is complimented by music industry lectures, guest artist workshops, master classes and instrumental clinics.

Students would be able to access a third year BA (Hons) top up either at the University of Chichester or at another university.

Students will spend 50% of their time in work placement and work based learning, providing a real vocational experience as a basis for your qualification.

Entry Requirements:
You will need to be able to demonstrate a strong interest in performing and to acquire a minimum of one subject at A2 (or equivalent) and 2 GCSEs at grades A to C. A standard equivalent to grade 5 to 8 on your main instrument is recommended.
